The route is also perfectly doable with a dog. The dog should, of course, be fit, healthy, and not too old or too young. We were there in October. There were few cows. The route was absolutely gorgeous.

Yes, there are several easy options. For a direct and accessible experience, consider the Tauplitz Waterfall loop from Hinter. This path is only 1.8 miles (2.8 km) long and offers direct access to the waterfall and its immediate surroundings, making it perfect for families or those seeking a gentle stroll.
Absolutely. Many trails are designed as loops, allowing you to start and end at the same point. A popular option is the Tauplitz Village – Tauplitz Waterfall loop from Hinter, which is 5.3 miles (8.6 km) and connects the village with the prominent Tauplitz Waterfall.
The terrain varies, but generally, you can expect stunning alpine landscapes with wide high valleys, ancient larch forests, and gray karst mountains. Paths range from well-maintained trails to more rugged sections, especially on longer routes. Elevations can vary significantly, from the lake's 1445 meters to surrounding peaks, offering both gentle ascents and more challenging climbs.
Beyond the waterfalls themselves, the region boasts numerous natural attractions. The Steirersee itself is a beautiful glacial lake, and you can find the 'Steirersee-Blick Bankerl' viewpoint above the lake for impressive vistas. The area is also part of a '6-Lakes Route' which includes other scenic lakes like Krallersee, Großsee, Märchensee, Tauplitzsee, and Schwarzensee, often integrated into longer hiking experiences.
Many trails in the Steirersee region are suitable for dogs, but it's always recommended to keep them on a leash, especially in sensitive natural areas or near livestock. The diverse terrain offers plenty of opportunities for your canine companion to enjoy the alpine environment alongside you.
Parking is generally available in the vicinity of popular trailheads, particularly around the Tauplitzalm Alpenstraße. Specific parking information for individual routes can often be found on the respective tour pages on komoot, such as for the Tauplitz Waterfall – Sagtümpel Spring loop.
Yes, the Tauplitzalm area offers various alpine huts where hikers can find refreshment, such as the Trawenghütte and Almrauschhütte near Steirersee. The Gnanitzalm also features the Johnsleitnerhütte and Hechlhütte. For accommodation, there are options in the broader Tauplitzalm region and nearby villages.
The Steirersee is known as a beautiful lake for swimming, particularly at the sandy beach on its eastern tip. While swimming directly in the plunge pools of waterfalls might not always be safe or permitted, the clear waters of Steirersee and other lakes in the '6-Lakes Route' offer excellent opportunities for a refreshing dip.
One of the longer and more challenging options is the View of the Steirersee – Tauplitz Waterfall loop from Steirersee. This trail spans 12.5 miles (20.1 km) and leads through extensive alpine scenery and past the glacial lake, typically taking around 7 hours and 43 minutes to complete.
Given the alpine environment, it's advisable to bring sturdy hiking boots, layers of clothing suitable for changing weather conditions, rain gear, sufficient water, snacks, and a map or GPS device. Sun protection is also important, and trekking poles can be helpful on steeper sections.
