The Gołdapska Góra (Geiersberg), with its height of 272 meters, is one of the most striking elevations in the ice-age-shaped Masurian hill country. For you as a cyclist or hiker, the ascent is worthwhile, as from the viewing tower there you can enjoy a wide panoramic view over the town of Gołdap and the dense forests of the Rominter Heide. By the way, the revolving café on the summit is a special treat!

The origins of the town of Gołdap date back to the second half of the 16th century. In 1565, Prince Albrecht Hohenzoller decided to found a town near the Lithuanian border in order to strengthen this part of East Prussia. A place lying on the Gołdap River was chosen for the new settlement. It was the village of Szyłajty, which in 1570 was granted town rights and named Gołdap after the flowing river.
