The Black-a-ven Brook flows from southwest of East Mill Tor to join the East Okement River at Cullever Steps. If you follow the brook upstream you will head into the Okehampton Range, so watch out for the red flags and check the live firing times before you do. It's all within Dartmoor National Park.

Meldon Reservoir was constructed in the 1970s to supply water to the surrounding area. The car park by the dam offers good access to the high tors of north Dartmoor. Run across the dam and up onto the moor or along the enjoyable lakeside trail.

The Okehampton firing range covers a large swathe of land on the North Moor, indicated by the red and white range markers. When the range is in use, red flags will be flown in prominent locations. Do not pass into the range when the red flags are flying. For dates and times when the MOD is using the range, refer to the MOD website https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/dartmoor-firing-programme.

Black Tor is made from three different rocky outcrops and the view from up here is simply stunning. Especially to Sourton Tors and Shelstone Tor in the north west. Black Tor is known for its logan stone, the name given to a rock that sways when pushed. Logan stones have become separated from the rest of the rocks through erosion, but when 'logged' they pivot on a contact point and do not over balance. Logged means to roll around drunk in Cornish. The most famous logan stone in Cornwall is probably Logan Rock, near Treen, Penzance.
