September 25, 2024, Timsbury Basin

Timsbury basin is one of the remnants of the old Somerset Coal Canal. This is where the canal began, flowing from here down to the Kennet and Avon canal near Bath. The canal isn't complete, but you can trace the route starting with these ponds.

Out of Saltford the first hill is pretty easy. Cross one road then the main road to get to Stanton Prior, then follow the sign for Wilmington. It's not overly long or steep but it has its moments. Can be slippy and muddy. Connects to Newton St Loe down a technical descent, or you can carry on towards Farmborough or Peasedown via Priston.

Bath Spa University has simply one of most beautiful campuses of any University anywhere. Set in the midst of rolling hills and fields dotted with ancient buildings and a castle, walled gardens and grounds designed by Capability Brown. Bath Spa University is also transected through and though with public footpaths, cycleways and rights of way. Definitely worth a visit ... even if you don't study here ...
