The canal is 63km long in total and links the River Shannon and the River Erne. It began life as the Ballinamore-Ballyconnell canal in 1846 and after falling into disrepair with the decline in industry, it was refurbished as a leisure canal from the 1960s.

Managed by the National Trust, the Crom Estate is a large nature reserve of woodlands, lake, castle ruins and islands. It is an important habitat for pine martens, bats, deer, red squirrels and butterflies. There is a coffee shop at the estate and if you fancy something different you can hire a boat to explore the lough.
