The Ram is a friendly country pub in Firle that serves good local food and locally produced cask ales. It has three rooms inside, each with its own fire from October to April. There's also a flint-walled garden for cool drinks under the greengage trees.

For the best, most chilled guided tours of the South Downs Way and then some, look no further than Marmalade MTB🍊🚵🏻♂️ no matter your level of experience. Your guide Sean Howell (& his team) is blessed with encyclopaedic knowledge of near every sq inch of of the South Downs National Park as if it were the back of his hand. Well almost, apart from this gate which completely stumped him when I asked him to identify its location⁉️🤔🥴😂 https://marmalademtb.com/calendar/

On a clear day the views are beautiful in every direction. The path is wide open here with no real shelter from the elements. You can descend down towards the Southease YHA or continue along the ridge in the other direction.

This 'secret' bridleway runs from a property next to Firle Park to Charleston, a country home associated with the Bloomsbury group, that is open to the public. The bridleway entrance at the west end is not that obvious - feels like you are entering someone's property but there's a gate which takes you to a narrow track (it's a little overgrown but only short) which opens out into a field of wheat. You'll pass crop fields and, grassy trails with the cafe at Charleston as a treat on the east end of this stretch.
