Easy hikes and walks around Huy

The gravel pit is a rich site for photography enthusiasts or walkers who wish to stroll along well-maintained paths and observe birds in peace. It's a recommended spot for walkers and photographers. Please respect the guidelines, such as keeping your dog on a leash (even if some people think it's harmless to let their dog off-leash, be aware that animals have predatory instincts, which could scare away certain ground-nesting bird species like kingfishers) and refraining from swimming so as not to disturb the birds. Along the Méhaigne River, at the bridge between Moha and Huccorgne, stands a small but significant war memorial. It commemorates the inhabitants of the valley hamlet who died during the First and Second World Wars, often civilians and resistance fighters from the immediate area. The Méhaigne Valley was a strategic crossing at the time, leading to regular checks, arrests, and confrontations around the bridge. The simple, understated monument preserves the names of those who lived here and never returned. In its simplicity, it serves as a quiet reminder of a small community that felt the war particularly hard.

Modave Castle was the first to use a pumping system that was revolutionary for its time. Every prestigious castle had its ponds and fountains, but many were situated on high ground and didn't always have springs nearby. Modave Castle, for example, was built on a rock 50 meters above the Hoyoux River. Renquin Sualem, a carpenter from Jemeppe-sur-Meuse, devised an ingenious system using water wheels on the Hoyoux River to pump water 50 meters up to the castle. It was so remarkable that Baron Arnold de Ville, a friend of the De Marchin family, brought the inventor with him to Versailles to pump Seine water up to the castle gardens. In 1684, the work was completed, and the famous "Machine de Marly" was a reality. It was one of the engineering marvels of its time. However, it was Arnold de Ville who took all the credit. Renquin Sualem didn't get what he deserved. The 'machine' would run for another 133 years before being replaced by steam engines.

An important tributary of the Meuse, with a fast current, historically important for the water pumping stations near Modave, and forms a beautiful natural area with hiking opportunities.

Located in the Solières valley near Huy, the Trou Manto cave is a limestone cave with a complex network of tunnels. Access is via a steep path supported by a rope. The cave has three levels with magnificent stalactites, a sloping floor with collapses, and twelve large columns supporting the vaults. The entire structure is an impressive karst phenomenon, approximately 600 meters long and 48 meters deep. The cave is protected and fenced off due to vandalism and to protect bats; visits are only possible with a guide or a caving association. The cave is known for its diverse hydrological phenomena and the legend of the Nutons, gnome-like helper beings from folklore. This combination of nature, history, and mythology makes Trou Manto a special place.
