The historic railway line runs along part of the original private railway Mariager-Fårup-Viborg. The current museum section is 17 kilometers long. The railway was opened in 1927 as the last of the Danish private railways and was in operation for 39 years until it was closed on March 31, 1966. The railway's largest freight traffic consisted of coal, which was transported from the port of Mariager to the Viborg gasworks.

From the higher points around Høllet, a wide view opens up over the Mariagerfjord – hills, forest, and the quiet water of the fjord in a view that is not easily forgotten. Right next door lies the Kielstrup Sø, separated from the fjord only by a dam, which gives the whole thing its own quiet atmosphere.

In the early 20th century, Mariager was a bustling port town that supplied, among other things, coal to the Viborg gasworks. Originally, the coal was loaded by hand, but in 1930, Mariager harbour received its own coal crane. In the 1960s, the stationary crane had served its purpose, and on the initiative of the association "Friends of the Harbour", it was listed as a protected monument, while at the same time the unique cultural and historical harbour ambience was preserved.
