Baroque Style: The church is a classic example of Sicilian Baroque. It was rebuilt after the devastating earthquake of 1693. The Inscription: Above the portal is the Latin dedication: “IN HONOREM SANCTAE LUCIAE VIR. MAR. SYRACUSANAE” (In honor of Saint Lucy, Virgin and Martyr of Syracuse). Saint Lucy is the patron saint of the city. Special Features: Twisted Columns: The main portal is framed by distinctive, spirally twisted columns. Iron Balcony: The elaborately wrought iron balcony at the top of the facade is a striking feature, typical of Spanish-influenced architecture in this region. Coats of Arms: Magnificent coats of arms, including those of the Spanish monarchs (House of Habsburg), are located to the left and right of the portal, as well as above it. Interesting facts The church is a major tourist attraction primarily because it (usually) houses a world-famous painting by Caravaggio: "The Burial of Saint Lucy." The small sign on the left of the image also provides information about exhibitions and other visitor information.

The Piazza del Duomo isn't just a square—it's considered one of the most beautiful Baroque squares in all of Italy, if not Europe. The most fascinating thing about the cathedral itself (Cattedrale di Santa Maria delle Colonne) is that it was literally built around an ancient Greek temple. The Temple of Athena: In the 5th century BC, a magnificent Doric temple stood here. The Integration: As you walk along the side of the cathedral or enter, you'll see the massive, original Greek columns seamlessly integrated into the Christian church walls. This is living history spanning over 2,500 years.
