CAUTION: the castle has absolutely nothing to do with the historical figure Vlad Dracula!!! ;-)) Bran Castle (Romanian: Cetatea Bran, often referred to in English as "Dracula’s Castle") is one of Romania's most famous and visited structures. Nestled within the dramatic rocks of the Southern Carpathians, just 30 kilometers from Brașov, the medieval fortress stands atop a 60-meter-high limestone cliff and is considered a symbol of mysticism, history, and Romanian folklore. Although often associated with the legend of Count Dracula, Bran Castle is, above all, a testament to Transylvanian history, architecture, and culture.

The heart of Brașov is the Old Town (Cetatea), which is surrounded by a completely preserved city wall with eight towers and seven bastions. The narrow alleys, cobblestone streets, and colorful houses from the 16th to 18th centuries give the city a fairytale charm. Particularly worth seeing is the Great Square (Piața Sfatului), the central square of the city, which is lined with patrician burgher houses and the Old Town Hall. The famous Christmas market, one of the most beautiful in Eastern Europe, also takes place here.

Piața Sfatului (German: Marktplatz or Ratplatz) in Brașov is the vibrant heart of the city and one of Romania's most beautiful and historic squares. Nestled between colorful burgher houses, the Black Church, and the Old Town Hall, it has been the heart of Brașov since the Middle Ages – a place of trade, festivals, and social life. Today, it is a meeting point for locals and tourists, captivating with its historical atmosphere, lively cafés, and cultural events. Piața Sfatului originated in the 14th century and quickly developed into the most important trading center of Transylvania. Saxon merchants, Hungarian traders, and Romanian farmers met here to exchange goods such as wool, leather, salt, and spices. The square was not only an economic center but also a place of power: the city council (Sfatul) met here, deciding the fate of the city, and laws were proclaimed and judgments were passed here.

The Prince of Wales House in Viscri (Saxon: Weißkirch) is a special guesthouse and cultural center, which became known through the long-standing connection of the British heir to the throne, Prince Charles (today King Charles III.), with Romania. The house is not only a place of hospitality, but also a symbol for the preservation of the Transylvanian Saxon heritage and the promotion of sustainable development in the region.

The lovingly designed open-air museum "Seele von Bran" invites visitors from sunrise to sunset with free admission. A series of benches invites you to linger. In the museum courtyard, you will find the crypt of the Knights of Pușcariu from Sohodol Bran, as well as numerous information boards about the heroes of the commune and the battles that took place here, about the monuments and symbolic buildings of the region. The museum was opened in 2020 by the team of Club Vila Bran with the support of historian Dr. Emil Stoian. It would be great if the boards also offered information for non-Romanian speaking visitors.

Great knit and felt goods for a good cause

The Johann Kessler Fountain on the Town Hall Square in the heart of Brașov impresses with its intricate details, reflecting the craftsmanship of its time. Equipped with eight drinking water dispensers, the fountain is dedicated to the Transylvanian writer Johann Samuel Keßler (1771 to 1796).
