The dune landscape of St. Peter-Ording, together with the salt marshes, the pine forests, and the 12-kilometer-long sandy beach, shapes the unique image of the North Frisian peninsula Eiderstedt. Nature and protection. The dunes on the coast of St. Peter-Ording are among the special natural features of the German North Sea coast. A protected dune strip, approximately 2.3 kilometers long, extends between the dike and residential areas to the South Lighthouse. To protect the sensitive nature in the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea National Park, entering the dunes is generally forbidden – with the exception of officially marked paths and crossings. Long wooden bridges lead from the dikes and promenades across the salt marshes and dunes directly to the vast beach.

The pile-dwelling restaurants of St. Peter-Ording are the famous landmark of the North Sea spa town and stand on up to seven-meter-high larch wood stilts directly on the beach. In 1911, the first pile dwelling, the "Giftbude", was built on the Ording beach. The stilt construction protects the buildings from the changing tides, storm surges, and icy floods of the Wadden Sea. Today, the structures serve not only as pile dwellings for gastronomy and beach bars but also for water rescue and sanitary facilities. As the North Sea is getting closer and closer to the coastal sections, some older structures have become dilapidated – such as the legendary beach bar 54° Nord, which was demolished in 2025. The municipality is planning modernizations, the reconstruction of individual locations, and the relocation of threatened landmarks to secure the tradition for the future.
