The Black Cross in the forest area between Hohenzell and Sittenbach near Sixtnitgern (municipality of Odelzhausen) is a historical monument that commemorates the Napoleonic Wars. According to tradition, it marks the burial place of three French soldiers in this remote location in the Adelzhauser Forst.

Anyone looking deep into the forest from the roadside here will encounter a fascinating, crater-like ring structure. It is typically an old material pit (gravel, sand, or clay extraction) for regional road construction, likely used in the 19th or early 20th century. The special feature is the distinctive hill in the center: In order not to have to laboriously clear deeply rooted, large trees with a shovel and wheelbarrow during manual excavation, people simply dug in a circle around them to a depth. This left a striking "excavation island" standing, where subsequent generations of trees now tower. The steep, eroded edges have been perfectly preserved in the sheltered forest floor and almost resemble an ancient fortification. To protect the steep, overgrown edges from sliding (and yourself from them) and not to disturb the forest inhabitants, it is best to observe the pit directly from the path and leave the structure in peace. 😊
