The history of the Tegernsee monastery is closely linked to the history of the town of Tegernsee until secularization in 1803 and can be read under the heading "from the history of Tegernsee". After the great secularization, the rich monastery assets were confiscated. The most important works of art and several thousand of the most valuable books from the library, which ultimately comprised over 40,000 volumes, went into state collections. Baron Karl von Drechsel, who was primarily interested in the profitable brewery and had several non-essential monastery wings demolished, bought the large monastery building at auction in 1805. In 1817, King Max I. Joseph (reigned 1799–1825) bought the remains of the complex and made it a royal summer residence; the former monastery became a castle. The building complex of the old monastery today has three owners: The former monastery church has served as a parish church since secularization. The castle houses – in addition to some representative living rooms of the ducal family – the "Herzoglich Bayerische Brauhaus Tegernsee" and two large restaurants. Two wings were acquired by the Free State of Bavaria in the 1970s to create highly attractive school rooms for the Tegernsee High School. The Tegernsee church does not count among those large church buildings that represent a single artistic style; rather, it is a "grown" church, in which many eras have left their mark. Parish Church of St. Quirinus The Catholic parish church of St. Quirinus in Tegernsee was, until 1803, the monastery church of the most important Benedictine abbey in Upper Bavaria. Between 1998 and 2004, it was extensively restored. Especially the early Baroque stucco by Italian masters and the frescoes by Hans Georg Asam now present themselves again in their original brilliance.
