Munkmarsch means monk march and indicates that the area formerly belonged to a monastery, namely Ribe Monastery (Denmark). The harbor was only built here in the 1850s, as the old Keitum harbor had silted up. Munkmarsch was then the most important Sylt harbor. From here, the new island railway brought tourists to Westerland from 1888. In 1869, the still-standing Alte Fährhaus was built.

The wooden bridge has a charm. Many people look at it, walk across it, and photograph it. They also notice the love locks on the sea side. Or enjoy the slightly elevated view.
