"The little water sprite is annoyed by the winter preparations, so he decides to go on a trip alone. The raft he's traveling on is difficult to steer in the storm without his friend, the beaver. He's lucky in his misfortune and only sprains his ankle when the raft crashes into a bridge pillar. Water sprite father and the Moor man finally find him, and afterward, despite the winter preparations, the family goes on a whole day's vacation. A wonderful book to brighten up dreary autumn days. The story doesn't shy away from the boring and unpleasant aspects of autumn and children's everyday life, nor does it omit the parents' distress in finding their child, nor does the little water sprite's feeling of not knowing what to do alone in the rain. All of this is brought to a happy and plausible ending and inspires trust in the parents. The atmospheric illustrations by Daniel Napp complement the text and make the already vivid language almost luminous, inviting you to explore the images." (Review by Antonia Mentel for the Borromäusverein)

Engenbergstein in the Old Saarbrücken City Forest. Here, the main hiking trails, the Saarwanderweg (Saar Hiking Trail), the Saarland Circular Trail, the Youth Hostel Trail, and the City Circular Trail intersect. The stone was erected on Tree Day 1994 by the Saarwald Association. Source: Wikipedia

It's a shame, much of it has become overgrown. Nature is reclaiming everything.

So "DFG" = "German-French Garden" 🤓 At weekends in the summer there are often events in the park, e.g. concerts. It's worth checking out the program every now and then (https://www.saarbruecken.de/leben_in_saarbruecken/freizeit/deutsch_franzoesischer_garten/veranstaltungen_im_dfg). You have to be careful with your bike, on most of the paths (including the entire west side of the lake) in the park you are not allowed to ride, you have to push your bike. The swans and geese will let you pass ;-)

The Alt-Saarbrücker Stadtwald is known as a 'green oasis' for Saarbrücken, featuring extensive forested areas and picturesque stream valleys. A significant highlight is the unique 'Urwald vor den Toren der Stadt' (Primeval Forest at the Gates of the City), where nature has been allowed to develop untouched, offering a truly wild atmosphere even on easy paths.
Even on easy routes, the terrain in Alt-Saarbrücker Stadtwald can be varied. You might encounter overgrown paths, lively streams, and occasionally marshy areas, especially within the primeval forest sections. Appropriate footwear is recommended for comfortable navigation.
The routes in Alt-Saarbrücker Stadtwald are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.5 stars from over 2,300 reviews. Hikers often praise the quiet woodlands, the natural beauty of the primeval forest, and the well-maintained paths that make for enjoyable, accessible walks.
Yes, many of the easy trails in Alt-Saarbrücker Stadtwald are designed as circular routes, allowing you to start and end at the same point. Examples include the Dicke Buche Natural Monument – Schlangenweg loop from Schœneck and the Around the Engenberg loop from Regionalverband Saarbrücken.
Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the trails in Alt-Saarbrücker Stadtwald. However, within the 'Urwald vor den Toren der Stadt' (Primeval Forest), it is particularly important to keep dogs on a leash to protect the sensitive ecosystem and wildlife. Always ensure your dog is under control and respect local regulations.
Many of the easy trails are well-suited for families. The varied landscapes, including stream valleys and the unique primeval forest, offer engaging environments for children to explore. Routes like the Rescue Point 6707-24 – Engenbergstein Memorial loop from Schœneck are shorter and have minimal elevation, making them ideal for younger hikers.
Absolutely. The easy hikes often lead past notable features. You can explore the unique 'Urwald vor den Toren der Stadt' (Primeval Forest) with its dense greenery and fallen trees. The Dicke Buche Natural Monument – Schlangenweg loop takes you past the impressive Dicke Buche. Other routes offer views of the Deutschmühlen Pond and traces of former industrial activity.
Thanks to the untouched nature of the primeval forest, the area fosters a diverse array of plant and animal life. Hikers have reported spotting various woodpecker species and a multitude of beetle species, including the endangered Lesser Stag Beetle. Keep an eye out for these creatures, especially in the quieter sections of the forest.
While many easy trails focus on the forest interior, some routes lead to areas offering scenic views. For panoramic views of Saarbrücken and, on clear days, even extending to France, you might consider trails that connect to the Schwarzenbergturm in the St. Johanner Stadtwald, which is a short distance from the Alt-Saarbrücker Stadtwald.
While many paths are generally easy, the varied terrain with overgrown sections, lively streams, and marshy areas means that not all trails are suitable for strollers or wheelchairs. Some wider, paved forest paths might be accessible, but specific routes designed for full accessibility are limited, especially within the 'Urwald' sections.
The Alt-Saarbrücker Stadtwald is beautiful year-round. Spring brings fresh greenery and blooming flora, while autumn offers vibrant fall colors. Summer provides pleasant shade under the dense tree canopy. Even in winter, the forest offers a serene experience, though some paths might be muddy or icy, requiring appropriate footwear.
Yes, Saarbrücken is easily accessible from the Stadtwald, often within a 20-minute walk from various points. This means you can find numerous cafes, restaurants, and pubs in the city center or nearby districts after your hike.
