Trei Caldari Rock Formation

Highlight • Natural Monument

The route to '' Trei Caldari '' or '' Windmills '' starts from the Zoological Garden, passing by the entrance to the Gospodinelor Terrace, on the forest path and following the path up the mountain ridge.
Those wishing to combine walking with a gondola ride can start the route from the train station. From time to time a few footpaths appear through forests that intersect the road, without any signs to Three Boilers. Continue on the ridge of the mountain. The route is also accessible to children.
The landscapes towards the Bistrita Valley and the Ceahlău Massif can only be admired in the two forest cuts made for the aerial electric network. After about an hour of leisurely walking, a few rocks appear in the path, one of which stands out because of the resemblance to a three-eyed skull. It is the three burrows that give the name of the place, Three Boilers. They were also called Huge Boilers, due to the rainwater that accumulates in the three holes. The rocks are at 679 meters altitude. The effort of climbing the 22 meters vertically is amplified by a few descents followed by slopes that intersect to the destination.
"The micro-relief is the result of the action of the wind, of the wind phenomenon, which happened 20,000 years ago. At that time, Ceahlău Massif was under the cover of eternal snow, and the lower region of Stanisoara had a harsh and cold climate, with strong winds, low vegetation carpet and a thin, discontinuous snow blanket, as it is now in Europe and Asia at over 60 ° northern latitude, ”explained geologist Constantin Grasu.

The dam was completed in 1960, after a construction that lasted about ten years. The mountain spring of Bicaz is built under Russian influence, it is a weight dam, which means that it keeps behind the support, by its own weight, the nearly 1.3 billion cubic meters of Bicaz accumulation lake.
For almost 60 years, 1.6 million tons of concrete have been holding the waters of the largest inland lake in Romania, so big that it has a captaincy, which belongs to that of Galați.
The colossus between Moldova and Transylvania, managed by Hidroelectrica, is 127 meters high, of which 30 underground, a 430 meter crown and has not only the role of keeping the lake of 31,000 hectares in spine, but also to supply water. for the hydroelectric power station Oak that connects it with an adduction tunnel dug in the mountain, with a length of 4.8 km.
At the construction site, no concrete mountain was poured, but 30. Specifically, the dam is made up of 30 concrete blocks, so it is almost impossible for it to completely give up in the event of a disaster. In case of overload, that is to say above the water limit, there are four mouths of discharge over the dam, a few meters below the level of the floor. To these are added four drainage berths at the base of the dam, ie at the initial level of the river, which allow the total emptying of the lake.
At the base, the dam is 119 meters wide and is like a hive, crossed by tunnels full of measuring instruments, including high-grade seismographs, which recorded, among others, the 2009 Sumatra earthquake. Concrete blocks are also constantly checked for any movement (horizontal or vertical), and the third verification system is the pendulum type. At the peak, the dam is thinned to 11 meters.

Batca Doamnei Lake is located at an altitude of 325 meters and is an important element of the city of Piatra Neamt because in addition to the purpose of protection, it also offers wonderful views. From here, you can admire on one side the panorama of the city, and on the other side, Mount Ceahlau in all its splendor.
Batca Doamnei Lake, together with Pangarati and Vaduri Lakes, is a special area for birds moving on the eastern Carpathian migration corridor and is an important link in preserving biodiversity and natural habitats for the entire eastern part of the European continent. The lake, due to its large surface, offers wintering conditions to a large number of birds. In recent years, on this lake have wintered populations of black-necked crocodile, red-necked crocodile, large window, mottled window and small window. Besides these species, in November, you can see on Lake Batca Doamnei specimens of large cormorants that land here during migration.

Very nice route, but at the same time a lot of care! For many it may seem easy, but it is not. Many cyclists have experienced this unequipped route and ended up in hospital. Preferably a DH equipment (as many features as possible). It was very pleasant and interesting.
