June 28, 2026, Ponte Suspensa do Barranco do Demo

De Passadiços do Barranco do Demo is a spectacular hiking route near the mountain village of Alferce, near Monchique in the Algarve (Portugal). The route is especially known for the impressive wooden suspension bridge that spans a deep gorge. Here is the most important information for your visit: The Suspension Bridge: The bridge is approximately 50 meters long and hangs about 20 meters above the bottom of the gorge. It is a safe, modern construction that offers beautiful views of the mountain landscape. The Hike: The boardwalk trail is about 1 kilometer long in total, but it is part of a larger circular hike of about 6 kilometers around the village of Alferce. Keep in mind that the route consists of more than 500 wooden steps; therefore, it requires a reasonable basic fitness level. Access: The route is freely accessible and open all year round. Accessibility & Parking: The route is located near Alferce. Many hikers park their cars at the cemetery (Cemitério de Alferce). From there, the hiking trails are signposted. Best time to visit: Because the route is located in a gorge, it can get very hot in the summer. Early in the morning or outside of the high season, the experience is most pleasant.

Stunning natural gorge located near the village of Alferce in the Monchique mountains. The area is a "green island" in the Algarve, featuring cork oaks, strawberry trees (medronheiros), and unique rock formations. Make sure you wear hiking shoes and bring some water. In the weekend on one site of the valley there is a convenience stand.

Spectacular images of the Algarve interior. 👍 Alferce, a parish in the municipality of Monchique. It is an area with low population density, known for its viewpoints, such as the Miradouro das Barreiras Brancas, the Miradouro do Monte Velho and the Miradouro do Barranco do Demo.
