Easy hikes and walks around Novalja

It is believed that this stone structure dates back to antiquity and was used as part of a visual communication network. Positioned on elevated terrain, the pyramid likely served as a beacon for transmitting light signals to distant locations. Such signaling systems were vital for warning of danger, sending strategic messages, or coordinating movements across vast areas. Although its exact origin remains uncertain, the site's construction and location strongly suggest a role in ancient communication practices.

In the center of the city, the parish church of St. Katarina, built in 1908 and which recently marked the 100th anniversary of its consecration.

The town of Novalja is located in a gentle bay of the northwestern part of the island of Pag. Its ideal geographical location on important land and sea routes from the northern to the southern Adriatic enables it to have excellent traffic connections with the mainland. Novalja is often an unavoidable port for many sailors who can, among other things, get fuel for their vessels here.

If you visit the cathedral in Zagreb today, you will find his grave surrounded by a sea of wreaths and flowers. The blessed bishop's church and his grave have become a new place of pilgrimage for Croatians. Few people in contemporary church history have been in the crossfire of different opinions as he was, even in the West.   The truth that Cardinal Stepinac was a martyr and a fighter for law and justice was suppressed in communist Yugoslavia until 1990, at least by the state. The faithful, on the other hand, always revered him as a saint, and his successors on the archbishop's throne, even in communist times, repeatedly advocated that the cardinal receive the justice he deserved.   It was only when Croatia became a free country after the declaration of independence in 1991 that the Croatians learned the whole truth about this martyr.🚵‍♂️🐯

One stop on the 2012 CHURCH IN NEED pilgrimage to Slovenia and Croatia, which we organized with the Institute for Church History of Bohemia-Moravia-Silesia, was Zagreb. The sarcophagus containing the remains of Archbishop Aloisius Stepinac is buried in the cathedral of the Croatian capital. He was convicted as a war criminal and collaborator in a scandalous show trial in Zagreb in 1946. On February 10, 1960, he died with the words of his motto on his lips: “In Te, Domine, speravi. – In you, O Lord, I have placed my hope.” Since 1997, the sarcophagus has stood behind the main altar of the cathedral in Zagreb. He was buried here two days after his death on February 10, 1960, in the presence of 18 bishops, 500 priests, and more than 100,000 believers.
