During winter, Carson Pass (Elevation 8,574 ft, 2,613 m) is the only ploughed snow-free road across the Sierra Nevada South of Lake Tahoe's Hwy 50. All other roads between the Coast or Central Valley and the Eastern Side of the Sierra are typically closed due to heavy snow from November to May, such as Hwy 4 (Sonora Pass east of Pinecrest), Hwy 108 (Ebbetts Pass east of Lake Alpine/Bear Valley Ski area), and Hwy 120 (Tioga Road in Yosemite National park). In winter the only next southern option to reach e.g. Death Valley, Mammoth Lakes, Mono Lake, Bishop etc. is around Bakersfield. There are several SNOparks at Carson Pass along the Hwy 88 between Kirkwood Ski Resort and Lake Tahoe, and many trailheads as starting points for backcountry ski and other snow sports.
