Roughly ten miles east of Clewiston, John Stretch Park offers one of the most inviting rest spots along the southern rim of Lake Okeechobee. Shaded picnic tables, restrooms, and potable water make it a convenient break on a long, exposed stretch of trail. From its grassy banks, you’ll get a broad view of the lake and surrounding levee—a calm, open place to pause before continuing west.

The John Stretch Park has some nice picnic tables, restrooms and potable water. It is a great spot to take a break, especially if you are hiking along the Florida Trail that has almost no shade before or after that. The Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail on the dike is close by.

The 109-mile trail circumferences Lake Okeechobee and is part of the Florida Trail. It leads you mainly along the 35-foot-tall Herbert Hoover Dike built for flood control between the 1930s and 1960s. There is no shade except for the very few small gazebos used as campsites. I would recommend this section for night hiking.

The Red Trail is an alternate route to the Florida Trail that just continues straight. You can combine the Red Trail with the Blue Trail for a nice loop. There is also Carpenter Camp along this loop if you want to spend the night in the wilderness.

If you want to extend your adventure along the Florida Trail you can do so by leaving the canal and hike into the open forest. If not, just continue straight.
