Always impressive and shocking how many people died in the two world wars. Puristically poignant complex with a pieta in the middle.

As memorials to the countless war dead, such sites – usually referred to as "war cemeteries" or "military cemeteries" – remain very important to this day. "Now, Lord, you let your servant depart in peace, as you have said...", says the so-called "Hymn of Simeon" (Luke 2:29). However, the many people buried here did not depart in peace, but rather became victims of war and an inhumane tyranny. The most important and at the same time perpetual function of military cemeteries, honorary cemeteries, or war cemeteries is therefore to keep the memory of this suffering alive and to remind each generation anew (!) of the need to maintain lasting peace.

At the power mill there is a campsite and a hotel with a restaurant. According to the website of the operator, the mill itself was originally a Lohmühle. The first written mention should go back to the 17th century. Lohmühlen were used at that time, in order to win the tanning material needed for leather tanning. With the help of the mill tannery-containing oak bark (= Lohe) was crushed. The raw material was won in so-called "Luhhecken" (Lohhecken). These were oak forests, which were managed in the Nierderwaldbetrieb to this end.

Meanwhile, the honorary cemetery is still the largest in Rhineland-Palatinate.

The hotel and restaurant "Machtemesmühle" is secluded in the Irsental. For decades there is also a campsite with many permanent campers. Also for many years, the former mill in the summer months and especially on the weekends in spring and early summer is a popular (motorcycle) Bikertreff. The mill itself is certainly very old. Unfortunately, I have no further information right now.
