What's the deal with the names? Are "aketegi" and "aitxuri" the same thing?

The hermitage of Andra Mari de Urbia is located in a wide, green valley surrounded by mountains, within the Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park, between Oñati and Zegama. It is an emblematic spot for Basque mountaineers, a common stop on routes to Mount Aizkorri and other peaks of the massif. The small church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, stands next to a shelter and a meadow ideal for resting or enjoying the views.

If you climb from Araotz, follow the PR, and the climb is very easy and short. From the cave parking lot, it's much steeper and zigzags. About 2.5 or 3 km with a lot of elevation gain.

Asparrena's mountainous terrain can offer opportunities for winter mountaineering, but conditions can be challenging. High-altitude passes and peaks may experience significant snow and ice. It's crucial to have appropriate winter gear, experience, and to check local weather and avalanche forecasts before attempting routes in winter.
Many routes start from accessible locations that typically offer parking. For instance, routes like the Aitxuri – Aizkorri loop often begin from Komentua, while others depart from Araia or San Adriango tunela. While many trails in the Basque Country are dog-friendly, specific regulations can vary, especially in protected mountain areas. It's always best to check local signage or park rules for each specific route to confirm if dogs are permitted and if they need to be on a leash, particularly due to wildlife or livestock.
Given the challenging nature of these routes, it's essential to be well-prepared. We recommend sturdy mountaineering boots, layered clothing suitable for varying weather conditions, waterproof outer shells, a map and compass (or GPS device), sufficient water and snacks, and a first-aid kit. Trekking poles can also be beneficial on steep ascents and descents.
While the main routes are popular for their panoramic views and challenges, exploring variations or less-known paths can lead to quieter experiences. For example, the Hermitage of Andra Mari de Urbia – Enaitz Summit loop from Komentua offers a moderate challenge and might provide a different perspective away from the most frequented peaks.
