The Westruper Heide is a 90-hectare nature reserve in Haltern am See, directly on the Halterner Stausee lake, known for its purple heather bloom in late summer, rare animals, and flat hiking trails. The area has been protected since 1937 and offers sandy dry grasslands as well as juniper groves. From July to September, the common heather blooms in a strong purple. With a bit of luck, you might see Thekla's lark, smooth snake, or wandering sheep for landscape maintenance. Free hiking parking spaces are located on Hullerner Straße, often near restaurants or beer gardens.

The Westruper Heide In the immediate vicinity of the Haltern reservoir, the approx. 90-hectare Westruper Heide stretches across sandy terrain. This impressive heath landscape was placed under nature protection as early as 1937 and is now a popular destination for excursions. Thousands of visitors stroll annually along the sandy paths through the broom heaths, poor sandy grasslands, and bizarre juniper groves of one of Westphalia's last large dwarf shrub heaths. Starting from the hiking parking lots on Hullerner Straße and Flaesheimer Damm, there are several entry points into the Westruper Heide. For people with limited mobility or vision, the Westruper Heide has also had an accessible route since 2010, starting from the Hotel Seehof, Hullerner Straße 102. Attractive information points also provide information about the special features of the heath. See: https://westruper-heide.de/
