In the Niers river redesign in Bresgespark, Mönchengladbach, completed in spring 2024, approximately 3.7 km of the river was newly constructed and designed to be close to nature. This returned an area of around 13 football fields in size to the Niers as a floodplain, thereby creating new habitats for plants and animals, as well as floodplains for high water levels. This redesign in the middle of the urban area strengthens biodiversity and species protection, supports the natural water cycle, and thus contributes to the climate resilience of the Niers and its surroundings.

Structural Change Safari Rhenish District: Natural redesign of the Niers... " Climate resilience: The ecological development of the Niers as an example of future-oriented watercourse design in urban areas - In the spring of 2024, the Niersverband completed the Bresgespark watercourse project in Mönchengladbach. In this pioneering watercourse redesign, the approximately 1 km long, unnatural watercourse of the Niers was extended to approximately 3.7 km and redesigned naturally. In addition, an area of approximately 13 football fields was returned to the Niers as a floodplain, thus creating new habitats and floodplains for high water levels. The ecological development of the Niers, as well as biodiversity and species protection, are strengthened, the natural water cycle is supported, and a contribution is made to the climate resilience of the Niers and its surroundings." https://www.niersverband.de/gewaesser/projekte https://www.gfa-news.de/news/20230926_004

A wonderful example of successful and very beautiful renaturation, which saved us in Mönchengladbach from flooding during the last heavy rain. I really enjoy cycling on the well-maintained paths.
