Lovely little cafe with compostable toilet! You can sit inside (which was lovely and warm) or outside - they did have a wasp problem but were actively trying to distract them from the customers!

For example, the Sibleyback and Colliford loop from Bodmin traverses the challenging open expanses of Bodmin Moor.
Yes, Cornwall has options suitable for families. The Camel Estuary, for instance, offers traffic-free cycleways like the Camel Trail, connecting towns such as Bodmin, Wadebridge, and Padstow. While specific family-friendly routes are not detailed here, look for routes described as 'moderate' or those utilizing converted tramways for a smoother experience.
Cornwall's gravel routes often pass through areas rich in history and natural beauty. You might encounter historic mining landscapes, such as those on The Poldice Valley, Mineral Tramway & Stithians Lake loop from Falmouth. Other highlights in the region include dramatic coastal views, the granite tors of Bodmin Moor like The Cheesewring, and significant natural monuments such as Lizard Point and Land's End. You could also explore areas near Tintagel Castle.
Many gravel routes in Cornwall are designed as loops, allowing you to start and finish in the same location. Examples include the Goss Moor, Bishop's Wood and Camel Estuary loop from Bodmin and the Bodmin Airfield, Blisland and the Upper Camel loop from Bodmin, which offer varied scenery and return to your starting point.
Many towns in Cornwall, such as Bodmin and Falmouth, serve as excellent starting points for gravel rides and are accessible by public transport. For instance, routes like the Goss Moor, Bishop's Wood and Camel Estuary loop start from Bodmin, which has good transport links. It's advisable to check local bus and train services for specific trailheads.
Parking is generally available in or near the towns that serve as starting points for many gravel routes. For example, if you're planning to ride routes originating from Bodmin, such as the Sibleyback and Colliford loop, you'll find parking options within the town or at designated trailheads. Always check local signage for parking restrictions and fees.
Cornwall's mild maritime climate makes it suitable for gravel biking for much of the year. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds, while summer provides longer daylight hours. Even winter can be enjoyable, though some trails, especially on higher ground like Bodmin Moor, might be more exposed to the elements. Always check local weather conditions before heading out.
Yes, many routes in Cornwall pass through or near charming villages and towns where you can find pubs and cafes. The Camel Trail, for example, connects several towns with amenities. Generally, no specific permits are required for cycling on public bridleways, byways, or designated cycle paths in Cornwall. However, it's always good practice to respect private land and follow any local signage. For routes that cross specific nature reserves or private estates, it's wise to check for any access restrictions, though these are rare for established cycling trails.
For those seeking longer rides, Cornwall offers several extensive gravel routes. The View of St Michael's Mount – Mousehole Village and Harbour loop from St Erth is a challenging 77.6 km route, while the Sibleyback and Colliford loop from Bodmin covers 64.2 km across Bodmin Moor. These routes provide substantial distances and elevation for experienced gravel bikers.
While many routes in Cornwall are rated moderate to difficult, there are easier sections, particularly on converted tramways and dedicated cycle paths. For a moderate challenge, consider routes like the Bodmin Airfield, Blisland and the Upper Camel loop from Bodmin, which is shorter and has less elevation gain than some of the more difficult options.
