I live in Kempten and I crossed the Illerradweg off my list a long time ago; it is simply boring and leads through the forest most of the time. What does it matter that the Iller flows there? None. The routes on both sides of the canal and the Iller can be a bit confusing. Heading south, the Illerradweg is only nice from Ferthofen and Kardorf onwards via hilly roads.

My date from 2025 was total nonsense, my brother and I cycled in 2026 towards Buxheim to the construction site when the construction workers had finished for the day. Do not ride during the day under any circumstances, it is far too dangerous. The detour via Heimertingen still exists and probably also until next year. It could become really beautiful when it is finished, whenever that may be.
