As the name suggests there is a nice sandy beach here. The water is shallow which keeps it warmer than other areas on the river. The park also has picnic areas, volleyball courts, and access to some hiking trails.

The views from the top of Lucky Peak are spectacular. You can see all the way down the valley to Lucky Peak Reservoir. Although the track to the top is good quality, it should be avoided in the winter when the snow can build up.

Lucky Peak (also known as Shaw Mountain) is one of the four Grand Slam Peaks. This 5,904-foot (1,800 m) mountain offers stunning views, but both the peak and most of the trail to reach it are fully exposed to the sun. You'll need plenty of water to account for that sun exposure. But don't forget to also bring layers, as the upper heights of Lucky Peak can be quite a bit colder than temperatures down below.

Yes, dogs are generally welcome on the trails in the Lucky Peak area, but they must be kept on a leash. The trails traverse a mix of open, sun-exposed foothills and riverside paths, so be sure to carry plenty of water for both yourself and your dog, especially during warmer months.
Absolutely. The area around Lucky Peak offers several easier options perfect for families. The Boise River Greenbelt, a paved path accessible from Discovery Park and Sandy Point, is a flat and scenic choice for a stroll. For a gentle trail experience with nice views, consider the Lydle Gulch & Sandy Point Beach loop, which is great for all fitness levels.
Parking is available at the main units of Lucky Peak State Park, including Sandy Point, Discovery Park, and the Spring Shores Marina. For trails starting away from the main reservoir, such as those heading to Adelmann Mine, there are designated trailheads like the one for Lydle Gulch off the main dam road. It's a popular area, so arriving earlier on weekends is a good idea to secure a spot.
To get a sense of the area's pioneer history, the Oregon Trail to Bonneville Point loop is an excellent choice. This moderate hike follows a section of the historic Oregon Trail and offers expansive views from Bonneville Point, a key landmark for early travelers. You can also explore the area's mining past on trails leading towards the historic Adelmann Mine.
Yes, for those seeking a challenge, the hike to the summit of Lucky Peak (also known as Shaw Mountain) is a rewarding option. The Lucky Peak (Shaw Mountain) via East Highland Valley Road route is a strenuous trek with significant elevation gain, but it rewards you with panoramic views of the Treasure Valley and the surrounding Boise National Forest.
The park is part of the Boise River Wildlife Management Area, which is a critical winter habitat for mule deer. You may also spot various bird species, especially along the Boise River corridor. The foothills are home to smaller animals typical of a high-desert sagebrush environment. Always observe wildlife from a safe and respectful distance.
The park has three distinct units, each offering a different experience:
Sandy Point Unit: Located at the base of the dam, it's known for its large beach. Hikes starting here, like those in Lydle Gulch, often involve sandy paths and views of the reservoir's base.
Discovery Park: This is a serene roadside park providing direct access to the Boise River Greenbelt, making it ideal for flat, riverside walks.
Spring Shores Marina: Situated further up the reservoir, this is the main hub for boating but also serves as an access point for trails that explore the rugged shoreline and hillsides around the reservoir.
Many trails are exposed with little shade, so sun protection is crucial. Be sure to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. Sturdy hiking shoes are recommended for the rocky and uneven terrain of the foothills. Most importantly, carry more water than you think you'll need, as the climate is dry and there are no water sources on most trails.
There are over 25 hiking routes to explore in and around Lucky Peak State Recreation Area. These range from easy, flat paths along the Boise River to difficult summit climbs in the Boise Foothills, offering a great variety for every type of hiker.
