Since 1996, Rimetea has been under a project to preserve its architectural treasures. Around 140 traditional buildings have been saved through this program. Their restoration, especially here at the Upper Market, has led to the town becoming known beyond the region. Today, it is one of the most important tourist attractions in the region.

After being destroyed by a fire in 1870, Rimetea was rebuilt. Whitewashed houses were built, richly decorated with works of local folk art and with the characteristic green-painted shutters. Particularly picturesque examples of this style of construction can be found on the hillside of the market square (Strada Felsö). These houses belonged to ironmongers and foundry owners of the 19th century. The ironmongers' shops were located in the high cellars, which you have to climb down a few steps from street level.

Together with the landscape of the Trascău Mountains, the Orthodox Church of Rimetea is the star of the many pictures of the famous village that tourists from all over the world take. The church and cemetery (with several Soviet soldiers' graves), with the bizarre mountain slopes behind them, are wonderfully picturesque.

Beautiful cave with a big entrance and a river that comes from inside. It's not accessible for visiting inside, but we'll worth the hike hear. You can feel the cold air flowing from inside, which is great, especially in the summer days.

The fortress was built in 1291. The views to the Trascau fortress are amazing. Worth the visit for sure. Unfortunately there are no signs to describe the history, so you'll have to do your own research. Trascau Fortress (also called Coltesti Fortress) is located 50 km away from Alba Iulia and was built at the end of the XIII th century by the Count Thoroczkay of Trascau as home and shelter for the whole community in times of war. It was intentionally built on the top of a limestone hill, following the Tartar invasion of 1241, when many damages were done to the towns Rimetea and Coltesti.

The Trascău Mountains are rich in history. You can visit the impressive medieval ruins of Trascău Fortress (also known as Colțești Fortress), which offers panoramic views. The region also features the ancient Dacian Fortress Apoulon, several 18th-century Wooden Churches scattered across picturesque hamlets, and the significant Râmeț Monastery.
The Trascău Mountains are renowned for their diverse natural features. Don't miss the dramatic Piatra Secuiului rock formation near Rimetea, offering spectacular views. The region is home to numerous gorges, including Turzii Gorge, Râmețului Gorge (known for its unique water walks), and Cetii Gorge with its 'Roman Baths' waterfalls. You can also find Vânătările Ponorului, an impressive limestone wall with a cascading waterfall, and Iezerul Ighiel, Romania's largest natural limestone dam lake.
Yes, Trascău offers several family-friendly options. The village of Rimetea, with its unique architectural style, is pleasant to explore. The Orthodox Church of Rimetea is also a calm and interesting spot. Many of the less strenuous hiking trails, especially those around the villages, are suitable for families. Rafting on the Arieș Valley between Sălciua and Buru is also an option for families with children due to its moderate water flow.
The Trascău Mountains are perfect for outdoor enthusiasts. You can enjoy extensive hiking, with trails catering to various difficulty levels, including the 'Speaking Stones' nature trail. Climbing is popular in the gorges of Turzii, Tureni, and around Piatra Secuiului. Mountain biking is also a great way to explore the scenic routes, and rafting is available on the Arieș Valley. Rimetea village is renowned for its unique and unitary architectural style. After a fire in 1870, it was rebuilt with distinctive whitewashed houses featuring green-painted shutters, many dating back to the 19th century. This commitment to preserving its cultural heritage earned it a Europa Nostra award in 1999, and it has been proposed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can see many examples of these Traditional Houses on Upper Market Square.
The Trascău Mountains feature numerous caves. The most significant is Huda lui Papara Cave, a speleological reserve known for hosting the largest bat colony in Europe. While its interior is generally closed to tourists due to its exceptional value, you can still appreciate its impressive entrance and feel the cold air emanating from within. The water from Vânătările Ponorului also disappears into the Dâlbina Cave before resurfacing at Huda Lui Papară.
The Trascău Mountains are beautiful year-round, but the best time depends on your planned activities. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures for hiking and exploring, with vibrant foliage in autumn. Summer is ideal for longer hikes, climbing, and water activities like rafting, though some caves might be cooler. Winter can be challenging for some trails due to snow and ice, but offers a unique, serene landscape for those prepared.
Hiking Piatra Secuiului is considered a challenging hike due to its steep ascent, but it rewards visitors with awesome views from the top. It's not recommended for absolute beginner hikers, but those with some experience will find it manageable. Allow a few hours for the round trip, depending on your fitness level and how long you wish to spend enjoying the panoramic scenery.
Many trails in the Trascău Mountains are dog-friendly, especially those in open areas and less protected natural reserves. It's always advisable to keep your dog on a leash, particularly in areas with wildlife or near livestock. Ensure your dog is fit for the chosen trail's difficulty and carry enough water for both of you. Specific regulations might apply in certain protected areas like Natura 2000 sites, so check local signage.
The highest elevation in the Trascău Mountains is Dâmbău Peak, standing at 1,369 meters (4,491 ft). It offers challenging hikes and rewarding views for those who reach its summit.
Yes, the Trascău region, particularly in villages like Rimetea, offers opportunities to experience traditional Romanian cuisine. You can find local guesthouses and small restaurants serving hearty dishes made with fresh, regional ingredients. Look for traditional soups, stews, and local cheeses. Many places also offer homemade spirits and local wines.
While popular spots like Piatra Secuiului and Turzii Gorge can attract visitors, the Trascău Mountains are vast, offering many less crowded trails. Exploring the numerous smaller gorges like Cheile Vălișoarei or Cetii Gorge, or venturing into areas around Masivul Bedeleu and Pădurea Sloboda, can provide a more secluded hiking experience. The hamlets with traditional hay-roofs also offer charming, quieter walks.
