From Bardonecchia, the route climbs steadily into the high mountains towards the Colle del Sommeiller. The road stretches for 26 kilometres, of which around 19 kilometres are gravel, and rises to just over 3,000 metres. Forest roads gradually give way to waterfalls, rocky switchbacks, alpine lakes and an increasingly barren landscape. The final section is rougher, but the climb remains largely rideable. At the top, the road simply ends. A remote place on the French–Italian border, and one of the highest points in Europe that can be reached by bike.

The view at the top is truly stunning; I recommend taking a walk and enjoying the scenery. I recommend going when the road is closed to cars and motorcycles, which raise a lot of dust.

The path that runs along the right bank of the lake is beautiful and offers breathtaking views.
