Ernst-Ludwig Pond

Highlight • Lake

Like most of the stagnant bodies of water in the RheinMain Regional Park, the Ernst-Ludwig-Teich, idyllically situated in the forest, is not a natural lake. It was created around 1890 as a fish pond. It is named after Ernst-Ludwig, Landgrave of Hessen-Darmstadt from 1678 to 1739.
The 1500 square meter lake in the east of Egelsbach is traversed by the Hegbach. It is located on the edge of the Koberstädter Forest, an extensive forest area between Egelsbach, Langen, Offenthal and Messel. In the course of a large-scale transformation of the forest into a recreation area, the pond was also excavated. In the east, the lake turns into a wide belt of reeds, a valuable biotope for water birds. Carp, pike and white fish cavort in the water.

It is not clear to today why Ernst-Ludwig of all people was named after him. Born in 1667, he was made ruler at the age of 11; however, he was under his mother's rule for ten years. His style of government was marked by immense spending. He introduced the absolutist form of government, put opponents out of the way and collected taxes. In view of the extravagance, expensive building projects and the tendency to gorgeous appearances, none of this helped to clean up the household.
Like so many from the Darmstadt ruling house, Ernst-Ludwig was a passionate hunter. He was even responsible for this somewhat dubious reputation. When the costs exceeded all limits, in 1718 opposition officials and theologians forced him, at least for a time, to stop the extremely expensive parforce hunt.

My favorite cow pasture is always worth a stop.
Chill out comfortably on the bench and enjoy the peace and quiet in the forest.
Today, February 25th, it was a little fresh to stay longer :-(

A beautiful, idyllic spot of water in the middle of the forest 🌳 the 🪷 were blooming, the frogs were croaking 🐸 fantastic for a rest, but quite a lot of people at the weekend, so it’s best during the week.

Unfortunately only a small 🐸 looked out of the water, but the background noise was definitely from more than one 😉
