On September 20, 1944, around 4 p.m., Antoon cycled from the now-liberated Geldrop toward Budel, which was about to be liberated. He rode home via Heeze, Leende, and Soerendonk, carrying a briefcase on a black women's bicycle. Past Leende, he passed fellow villager Jan Lammers, who had been milking a cow as a farmhand for the Van Lievenoogen family and was then returning to the farm with a jug of milk. Antoon asked him if Budel had been liberated yet. Jan didn't dare say, but it could happen at any moment, as the area was teeming with retreating German soldiers and gunfire could be heard clearly in the distance. At that moment, five SS men or German soldiers jumped onto the road and stopped Jan and Antoon. They were asked to show their identity cards. Jan didn't have any, but Antoon handed over his forged one. His bag was also searched. Suddenly, Antoon is cursed and labeled a traitor. "We're going to kill you!" is shouted at him. Antoon collapses and begs for mercy, while Jan is ordered to run away. He has to watch as Antoon is shot and bayoneted to death on the roadside. Antoon was 31 years old.
