The Biesbosch was originally polder land, but after a storm surge, the area transformed into an inland sea. Water from the Maas and Waal rivers transformed it into a freshwater delta. Sand and river silt formed sandbanks, which were particularly suitable for rushes. Hence the name 'Biesbosch'. When the Haringvliet inlet was later closed off, the large differences between high and low tides disappeared. Nature was given free rein, and the area became wilder. Today, sea eagles and ospreys breed here again. A truly special sight!

The design of almost all the bridges over the canals in Biesbosch is standard – nothing particularly special. However, most offer a nice view of the water.

Great area for cycling through the wetlands with lots of birds to spot.

No parking. Parked in the passing lane. The first half of the trip was very boring: a long stretch along the fields.

On 21 June 1944, Lancaster LM508 SR-P crashed at this location. Of the 8 crew members, two were killed. The salvage work started on 26 September 2014. During the salvage, there were two open days for the public, on 25 October and 1 November 2014. After a few weeks of digging, many parts of the aircraft (a propeller blade, part of an engine block, a fire extinguisher, bullets, a dinghy, a parachute and metal parts) had already been found. On 17 October 2014, human remains were found in the wreckage. DNA identification showed that it was Sgt. John Edward Keogh. He was buried in Werkendam in June 2016.
