The Zuiderkerk church in Emmen has not been used for worship for some time. The church, designed by Albert Cuypers, was added to the city's list of historic monuments, and a plan for its conversion was subsequently examined. Thirteen apartments have now been built in the church, and a further four apartments have been built in the old rectory in front of the church. Each house is suitable for one- or two-person households. Architect Bert Pepping prepared the drawings and designed the plan. The former Zuiderkerk church is a historic monument, and therefore the exterior had to remain unchanged. The new floor plan was realized as a box-in-box construction, with living spaces on various levels.

The former town hall was built in 1938. After a visit by the Minister of Internal Affairs in 1937, the then municipality of Sleen received an offer of 35,000 guilders from the work fund for combating unemployment and the construction of a new town hall. Preparations for the construction of the neo-renaissance design by architect A. Baart from Leeuwarden began in the autumn of 1937. A year later, on 3 October 1938, the building was officially opened.

The ‘Drentsche Veen- en Middenkanaal Maatschappij’ started in 1852 with the construction of the Oranjekanaal. The company bought peat land behind Emmen and in the Odoornerveen. In 1854 the canal diggers reached the place where the canal crossed the route from Coevorden to Groningen. This ancient road followed the Ridge of Rolde. This is where the village of Schoonoord eventually arose.
