"On the lower right bank of the Lower Rhine in the district of Kleve, in the small town of Dornick, directly on the Rhine dyke, is the Dornick tower windmill (Deichstraße 251). One of the oldest existing drawings of the mill comes from the well-known painter Jan de Beijer. Jan de Beijer painted the massive cylindrical mill tower with loopholes in 1732. It is therefore assumed that the mill previously had a defensive function. The tower belonged to the Lords of Wenge. It was confiscated in 1721 by the King of Prussia, Frederick II. On a base map from 1733, the mill was described as a royal horse and windmill. Next to the windmill there was also a horse mill for times when there was little wind. At that time, the mill also had a house and a garden. In addition to its function as a defensive tower, the mill could also have served as a customs tower.
