The "Pappelhof", located outside the town towards the Rieseberger Moor, became the scene of eleven (according to the memorial stone, ten) political murders by the SS on July 4, 1933, which later became known as the Rieseberg Murders. The SS had brought the political opponents (members of the SPD and KPD) from Braunschweig on the same day after torture and interrogations in the local AOK building. An example was to be made of them in retaliation for the alleged death of an SS member on June 29, 1933, in Braunschweig. The bodies were buried in the local cemetery and exhumed in 1953. It was then discovered that there had been eleven victims, although the identity of only ten men has been reliably clarified. In 1933, the "Pappelhof" was trade union property and served as a holiday home for children of workers; today it is privately owned.

It's a pleasant place to sit. The bench is relatively new, sheltered, and offers a beautiful view of the Elm River all the way to Bornum.
