The Oker River meanders gently through the Bürgerpark. A multitude of paths accompany the river through this large green space south of the city center. The branches of large weeping willows touch the surface of the calmly flowing water, bridges span the river, and occasionally a coypu makes an appearance. If you'd like to do more than just stroll, you can also explore the park by kayak or paddleboard.

The church of Apelnstedt is located on the western edge of the village. Its predecessors likely date back to the 12th century, when a Romanesque-style baptistery was built on the same site. The devastation of the Thirty Years' War left only scant information about this period. Complaints about the church's poor condition survive from the 18th and early 19th centuries. In 1862, the church was to be renovated, but during the work, even those parts of the church that had originally been intended to be saved collapsed. Thus, a complete reconstruction of the church became unavoidable. The new church was built by Carl Müller and shows influences from Carl Theodor Ottmer, who in turn was influenced by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The Apelnstedt church stands in close proximity to St. Jürgen's Church in Braunschweig-Ölper, which was also built by Müller. The church was consecrated in 1864, and during a renovation in 1894, the interior was painted in vibrant colors. There were constellations of the zodiac on the ceiling and a musical angel above the organ. These works were executed by the church decorator Adolf Quensen, who at that time received numerous commissions for secular and religious buildings in the Brunswick region, including the Knights' Hall of Dankwarderode Castle in Brunswick. This historicist style of the late 19th century, for which Quensen was known, was deemed outdated during a renovation in the mid-20th century. Extensive restoration work on the walls and ceiling destroyed large sections of Quensen's paintings. However, the Evangelists on the altar wall were merely painted over with emulsion paint, allowing them to be uncovered again during a further restoration in 2000. Together with the color scheme of the uncovered and partially reconstructed ornamentation on the east wall of the church, they now define the overall impression of the church, offering a glimpse into the 19th century.

This idyllic picnic spot is located on the edge of the village, near the allotment gardens. It's right next to the main road, yet surrounded by greenery. Ancient trees grow on the small plot, their branches hanging almost down to the water. There are benches for relaxing and a picnic table on a small lawn.
