The structure stands on fieldstone foundations of a predecessor building. As early as 1541, a visitation protocol mentions a Semlin church; as early as 1450, there was a "Pfarrhufe" (approx. 17 hectares) in Semlin, i.e., church land. It is possible that the Dutch and Flemish, brought to the region as settlers by Margrave Albrecht, founded the Semlin church site as early as the end of the 12th century. A really great building. Unfortunately, the route there isn't signposted at all. Coming from the train station, I would never have found the beginning without Komoot, and from the other side it's not really obvious that you can drive past the edge of the optics park to the bridge.
