The church dates back to the 14th century. The Rose Square in front of it is also very beautiful.

You won't believe it straight away, but the ferry can also take 2-3 vans in one go. Hand-operated, the current does the rest.

Latvian- Estonian memorial to the battles of Cēsis (Wenden) The battles of Cēsis were one of the decisive battles in the War of Independence of Latvia. The battles took place in June 1919 between units of the Estonian army and the 2nd Latvian Infantry Regiment of the Northern Latvian Brigade in the one hand and the Baltic Landeswehr and the Iron Division on the other. From the students of Cēsis and Valmiera schools, a group of students of the Cēsis Regiment was created to supply the only 300 soldiers strong 2nd Cēsis Regiment before the above mentioned Estonian & Latvian troops managed to reach Cēsis. The battles of Cēsis ended with the victory of the combined Estonian and Latvian forces and proved as a critical moment in the War of Independence by stopping and repelling the German offensive and turning it into a counterattack.

St. John's Church is the second most notable architectural feature in Cēsis and one if the oldest medieval monuments and oldest cult buildings in Latvia. The church was built in the 13th century as Christanity advanced into the Baltics to serve the needs of the Livonian Order. It was first a Catholic Church, as the reformation (1524)/counterreformation(1582)/reintroduction of Lutheran faith (1627) hasn't happened yet. Because Cēsis was the residence of the Order, Cēsis then became one of the most important centres of the German authorities in the Baltic States. Livonian Order Masters, clerics and knights are buried in there, this you can see one of the largest collection of tombstones in Latvia. The organ is one of the largest historical concert organ in Latvia. The church altarpainting is the masterpiece of the Estonian artist Johann Köhler (1826-1899).
