Mazirbe is located on an almost infinitely long beach with the finest sand. There used to be a bustling fishing port here, but all you can see of it are a few wooden pillars sticking desolately out of the sand.

The Fishing Boat Graveyard is a spooky place. There lie the skeletons of some wooden boats after the Soviet Union banned private fishing in the 1960s. At that time there were many more boats here, but some were burned or used to build houses.

This trail will take you back in couple of thousand years of history - it is located over the backs of kangars and lows of vigas. Kangars are ancient dunes and vigas are moist interdune depressions. Such a complex originated at a time when the sea was still rippling here. In spring and autumn, vigas undergo transformations - they flow with water and become small seasonal lakes.

The reserve is Latvia's only concentric bog, featuring a distinctive circular pattern of bog pits, hummocks, and ridges. This creates a visually striking and complex terrain, often described as a 'Minotaur's labyrinth' due to its numerous bog lakes, pools, and deep bog holes. The bog itself forms a dome, rising up to 5-6 meters higher than the surrounding area.
Yes, there is a small observation tower that provides excellent panoramic views over the bog. It's a great spot to appreciate the vastness and unique structure of the reserve, especially during misty sunrises or sunsets.
Quiet hikers might hear the calls of cranes or the bubbling sounds of black grouse. The bog is also home to unique flora, such as the fascinating insectivorous plant, the sundew (rasene), which attentive visitors might spot.
While the bog terrain can be challenging, guided tours often cater to different interests, including families. These tours can offer a chance to explore the bog's ecology in a more structured and accessible way. For a shorter, easy walk, consider the Wooden Bridge in Forest – Pēterezers Viga loop from Zārtapu ūdenskritums, which is 2.0 miles (3.3 km) long.
The bog offers a magical atmosphere at sunrise or sunset, especially when enveloped in mist. While specific seasons aren't detailed, spring and autumn often provide cooler temperatures and unique light conditions. Guided tours are available year-round, sometimes even offering overnight stays for a deeper experience.
Yes, several loop trails allow you to start and end at the same point. Examples include the Mazirbe Boat Cemetery – Livonian People's House loop from Mazirbe, a moderate 8.9 miles (14.4 km) route, and the shorter, easy Wooden Bridge in Forest – Pēterezers Viga loop from Zārtapu ūdenskritums.
Given the bog's challenging terrain with deep bog holes and soft areas, appropriate footwear is crucial. Waterproof hiking boots are highly recommended. For guided tours, bog shoes are often provided and are essential for navigating the unique environment safely.
Specific public transport routes directly to the reserve are not detailed. It is generally advisable to check local transport schedules or consider driving to access the starting points of the trails.
