The fortress was built to protect the west coast and served for a long time as a notorious prison. The most famous inmates were the master thief Lasse Maja, who after 5 years of imprisonment worked in the prison kitchen for another 15 years, was pardoned by the king (as the only inmate) due to his cooking skills and appointed the king's personal chef, and as the only woman, the presumably innocent and finally executed Metta Fock.

This little cove is often used as a stop-off point by kayakers. It is a real little corner of paradise where tranquillity reigns. The walk to get there is very pleasant, until the landscape opens up and the sea comes into view, through a small gap between two hills.
