Tips from the Community

Stephen Sadler
August 27, 2025, Ruthin Historic Town

A lovely small town with a couple of spots to stop on the bike (pubs and cafes). Undulating terrain so make sure you're leaving the right way to avoid having to come back up the road you've just cycled down!

Ruthin is a market town and community in Denbighshire, Wales, in the south of the Vale of Clwyd. It is Denbighshire's county town. The town, castle and St Peter's Square lie on a hill, skirted by villages such as Pwllglas and Rhewl. Make sure you stop at the tower clock.

Set in the North Wales county of Denbighshire, Ruthin is a gorgeous town with a rich cultural history. The centre of the old town, including St Peter's Square, is set on a hill, whereas some newer parts are built on the flood plain of the River Clwyd. Ruthin's peak was in the 1700s as an important stopover town on the drovers' roads between Wales and England. It's said that there used to be a pub for every week in the year in the town, although unfortunately there are many less now!
