Yes, the area is excellent for circular walks. Many trails are designed as loops, starting and finishing at popular car parks. You can find everything from short, family-friendly circuits to more demanding all-day hikes that return you to your starting point, especially within Macclesfield Forest and Tegg's Nose Country Park.
For an easy and accessible walk, the Tegg's Nose Quarry – View from the summit of Tegg's Nose loop from Bollin Meadow is a great option. It's a short walk of about 2.9 km that explores the former quarry and offers rewarding views without a major climb. The paths around the reservoirs in Macclesfield Forest are also suitable for families.
Most trails around Macclesfield are dog-friendly, but it's essential to keep your dog under control, especially in Macclesfield Forest where there is a herd of red deer. In areas with livestock, such as the fields around Shutlingsloe, dogs must be kept on a lead. Always check local signage for specific restrictions.
A popular destination for its scenery is Three Shires Head, a picturesque spot where Cheshire, Derbyshire, and Staffordshire meet, featuring a charming packhorse bridge and several small waterfalls. Another local spot is Waulkmill Waterfall in Bollington, which is a short walk from the village.
Macclesfield Forest has several pay-and-display car parks that serve as excellent starting points for trails. The main ones are Trentabank, Standing Stone, and Clough House. Trentabank is particularly popular as it provides access to reservoir walks and routes up to Shutlingsloe. Arrive early on weekends as they can fill up quickly.
While some trailheads are remote, you can access parts of the area via public transport. Buses run from Macclesfield to surrounding villages like Langley and Sutton, which are close to Macclesfield Forest. For Tegg's Nose, the journey is often easier by car, but it's worth checking local bus schedules for services that run along the Buxton Old Road.
For experienced hikers seeking a challenge, the View from the summit of Tegg's Nose – Shining Tor trig point loop from Bollin Meadow is a demanding option. This 21 km route involves significant elevation gain, taking you to Shining Tor, the highest point in Cheshire, and offers some of the most expansive views in the Peak District.
For panoramic views, the summits of Shutlingsloe (the 'Cheshire Matterhorn') and Shining Tor are unbeatable. Tegg's Nose Country Park is also highly regarded for its westward views across the Cheshire Plain, where you can see as far as the Welsh hills on a clear day.
Yes, for a relatively flat and pleasant walk, consider the Macclesfield and Prestbury loop via River Bollin. This trail follows the River Bollin through fields and woodland, connecting the two towns with minimal climbing, making it ideal for a relaxed afternoon.
Macclesfield Forest is a large, working woodland primarily composed of pine trees. It's a former royal hunting ground that now contains four reservoirs, including Trentabank, which is home to the largest heronry in the Peak District. The forest offers a network of well-marked paths and bridleways, with a mix of gentle reservoir-side strolls and steeper climbs into the surrounding hills.
There are over 100 different hiking routes to explore around Macclesfield, ranging from short, easy walks of less than an hour to difficult all-day treks into the heart of the Peak District. The network covers everything from woodland paths and reservoir loops to rugged gritstone ridges.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community. Hikers often praise the variety of the landscape, from the dense woodlands of Macclesfield Forest to the wide-open views from Tegg's Nose and Shining Tor. The well-maintained paths and the mix of both challenging and accessible routes are also frequently mentioned.
