An extremely steep bridge that we drove over getting to the car park (it was like a ride from Alton Towers 🤣) and then walked over at the start and end of our route.

This small village very much grew up around the canal and was little more than a collection of farm buildings and a pub prior. The waterway created demand for an inland port and Maesbury Marsh expanded in response. Once a thriving settlement, the village became quieter when the railways began to take over freight and the canal became redundant. Over the years though, it has regained much of its life and today it's a lovely place to visit and explore, seeking out signs of its past.

February 2, 2021, Lower Frankton Locks

These locks sit at Frankton Junction, where the Montgomery Canal leads south from the Llangollen Canal. There's a staircase of two locks and two additional locks here, making it a wonderful spot to stop and watch any boats that happen to be passing through. The junction was built in the 18th century but the locks became redundant in the early 20th century, when the Montgomery Canal ceased use. After a restoration campaign and project, the locks and the canal are now in use again.
