Nice if you like cold war figher-bombers. Good road down to Boulmer and round the coast to Lesbury. Avoids some of the traffic on the direct road past the base

Absolutely stunning! Alnwick Castle is one of those rare places that feels both grand and welcoming. The architecture is jaw-dropping, and the setting over the River Aln is gorgeous. The staff are friendly, and the guided tours add a lot of colour to the history — from medieval battles, to its military museum, to its modern fame as “Hogwarts” in the Harry Potter films. The state rooms are also beautifully preserved and reek of state level opulence. It can get busy and the tickets aren’t cheap, we paid £19 for being in the 60+ dementia category, down from £22 for normal adults, but it’s worth every penny for the experience. Don’t skip a walk through the nearby gardens (closed for us today because of winds)or a look over the castle walls — the views of Alnwick town are fantastic.

This is now called the Arch Cafe. Food is great, good selection, service excellent. Indoor and outdoor seating. Also has a little gift shop. Recommended (had been open on Sundays but back to the opening times in 51m post)

Today popular with locals and visitors: Here you will find a huge shady picnic area right by the river, next to the bridge

North of the town of Alnwick, across the River Aln, sits the castle of the noble Percy family, who have resided here for centuries. A stone lion was already visible on the bridge over the river. And on this extremely imposing monument in the south of the town, the heraldic animal of the noble house, in whose honor and praise it was erected, is represented three times: two have settled at the base of this massive column, and the third stands majestically at the very top, crowning the "Tenantry Column." User @mkirby has already documented a detailed article on the history of the building, which is over 200 years old.
