Whitby & Robin Hoods Bay loop

22.8km

300m

Embark on the difficult Whitby & Robin Hoods Bay loop, a 14.2 miles (22.8 km) hike with 994 feet (303 metres) of elevation gain, typically taking around 6 hours and 9 minutes to complete. This route offers a diverse experience along the Yorkshire coastline, featuring dramatic clifftop views and historical landmarks. You will traverse rugged coastal paths with undulations and steps, passing iconic sights like Whitby Abbey perched on the East Cliff, and the fossil-rich Saltwick Bay with its visible shipwreck.

Be prepared for varied terrain; the coastal path can be muddy, especially in winter, so sturdy shoes are essential. The weather along the coast can change quickly, so carrying waterproofs and layers is recommended. The initial climb of the 199 steps in Whitby up to St Mary's Church and Whitby Abbey presents a challenging start for some hikers.

This loop connects the historic town of Whitby with the charming smuggling village of Robin Hood's Bay, offering a journey through rich history. A significant portion follows the Cleveland Way National Trail, providing stunning views of the North Sea and unique geological features. You have the option to return via the Cinder Track, an old railway line, which offers a flatter, inland countryside experience as a contrast to the coastal drama.

Nice stop on a ride to look over the coastline. Food and drink vendors around. Watch the tourist boats go out from this viewpoint. Whitby is one of the few places in the UK where you can watch the sun rise and set over the sea in summer. The West Pier is easier to access and an excursion along the pier and pier extensions makes a fine evening stroll. Both of Whitby's piers offer good fishing with big cod and decent catches of whiting in winter although they can get busy in summer with tourists and many people using spinners and lures to fish for mackerel. The pier was created in 1735 and has some amazing architecture in place with old carving and original boat moorings still in place.
