Archäologische Sondierungen ergaben 1992 den auffälligen Befund, dass die gesamte Burganlage in einem Stück errichtet wurde. Anders als man erwarten könnte, erfolgte der Bau also nicht stufenweise.
Die Ersterwähnung des Ortes Arnesvelde, jedoch nicht der Burg, erfolgte 1196 im Zuge einer Schenkung durch Graf Adolf III. an das Domkapitel von Hamburg. Den ersten sicheren schriftlichen Beleg für die Existenz einer Burg bietet ein 1306 zwischen den Städten Hamburg und Lübeck geschlossenes Bündnis, mit dem die Niederlegung Arnesveldes, wie auch der Burgen in Wohldorf (heute in Hamburg gelegen) und in Travemünde vereinbart wurde.
