The church dates from the 16th century. Just across the road from the church is the village hall which is one of the few places you can park in the village. There is a honesty box for the car park fee with a suggested payment of £3.00. There are very few places so as stated above get their early.

There are over 20 hiking trails to explore around Over Staveley, ranging from easy riverside strolls to more challenging ascents into the fells. The area offers a great variety for hikers of all abilities.
The trails are highly regarded by the komoot community, with over 36,000 visitors contributing to an average rating of 4.6 stars. Hikers often praise the mix of gentle riverside paths along the River Kent and the rewarding views from the surrounding fells.
Yes, there are plenty of easy options. For a short and pleasant walk, try the St Margaret's Tower, Staveley – Staveley Mill Weir loop from Nether Staveley. It's a gentle 2.1-mile (3.4 km) route that's perfect for a quick outing and gives you a nice feel for the village and its surroundings.
Absolutely. Many of the best routes in the area are circular. A great example is the Kentmere Hall – St Cuthbert's Church loop from Kentmere, which takes you through the scenic Kentmere Valley. Most trails are designed as loops so you can easily return to your starting point.
Yes, the area is generally dog-friendly, with many trails passing through open countryside. However, you will likely encounter livestock, especially sheep, so it's essential to keep your dog on a lead. Also, be aware that some routes may involve stiles that could be difficult for larger dogs to cross.
For panoramic views with relatively little effort, the ascent of Hugill Fell is a popular choice. On a clear day, you can see across the Kentmere fells and even as far as the Howgills. It's a highly-regarded viewpoint for appreciating the Lakeland landscape.
Yes, the area is known for its beautiful ancient woodlands. You can explore trails through Craggy Wood and Dorothy Farrer's Wood, which are especially stunning in spring when the bluebells and wild garlic are in bloom. These woods offer a different kind of hiking experience compared to the open fells.
The terrain is quite varied. You'll find gentle, well-trodden paths along the River Kent, which are great for easy walks. As you head for the fells, expect steeper, rockier paths and potentially boggy sections, especially after rain. The Garburn Pass, for example, is a classic mountain track with a rough and stony surface.
Parking in Staveley village can be limited, especially on weekends. There is a main pay-and-display car park in the village centre which is a good starting point for many local walks. For some outlying trails, you may find small lay-bys or designated parking spots, but these fill up quickly. Arriving early is always a good strategy.
Yes, the Kentmere Valley offers fantastic hiking opportunities around the reservoir. The View of Kentmere Reservoir – St Cuthbert's Church loop from Kentmere is a moderate route that provides excellent views of the reservoir and the dramatic fells that surround it.
The weather can change very quickly. It's crucial to wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots and dress in layers. Always pack a waterproof jacket and trousers, even if the forecast looks good. In autumn and winter, add a hat, gloves, and an extra warm layer. It's better to have it and not need it than the other way around.
For experienced hikers looking for a challenge, the Kentmere Round (or Kentmere Horseshoe) is a classic high-level fell walk. It's a long and strenuous day out, covering a horseshoe of peaks around the Kentmere Valley and requiring excellent navigation skills and fitness.
