An image above shows the lighting system switched on, however for one reason or another, it was off as I passed through on an overcast day. Another rider oncoming without lights (like me) was barely visible in the middle of the tunnel. Mercifully, we'd already spotted one another entering. If you have an urge to read your phone/navigation device on a similarly gloomy day while the tunnel lighting system is switched off, my advice would be to do so before you enter the tunnel. You're going to need 100% attention if there's traffic ahead!

Fantastic multi-user track along old railway. A taste of what its like on one of those long European bike paths that we don't have.

In 2020, the Bobbin Mill Tunnel opened as part of an upgrade project to the Keswick to Threlkeld Railway Path. It was originally one of the two tunnels on the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith railway line and was dug through a spur on the banks of the River Greta. As part of the refurbishment project, picnic benches and viewing stations were installed close by.

A huge free-standing boulder that you can climb using the ladder. Caution: you should not be afraid of heights.

Nice shortcut via bridge Portinscale to Keswick. Also there is a good and free car parking on Keswick end od the foot bridge. Dead end road.

Running south from Keswick, Borrowdale Road traces the eastern edge of the beautiful Derwent Water. It's a lovely scenic stretch, with views of the lake and mountains, giving it an almost Swiss-like feel. The road can get busy at certain times, but generally it's fairly quiet to cycle along.

Stop. Take it all in. These bridges all gave areas to stop and have a break/rest if you wanted to.

Some say! If you look through the hole you'll see where The Professor of Adventure buried his gold! Others say if you can unlock the mystery of the Bowder Stone Stone you can open the bowder stone and release Mr Bowder! Some people have even said The president of the National Trust, Princess Louise, daughter of Queen Victoria, and sister of King Edward VII, wanted to make a gift in memory of the King, when he died in 1910. Grange Fell was purchased, which included the Bowder Stone, and a memorial stone to King Edward was placed on the fell (grid ref 90: NY 258167). Eight years earlier Princess Louise had performed the opening ceremony at Brandlehow Wood, the first Lake District’s first aquisition. who knows who is correct. Who Knows
