Take your time visiting Rydal Cave. It is a large cave on the north side of Loughrigg Fell, above Rydal Water. This cave is actually man-made, as a result of slate mining. Take the stepping stones through the shallow water at the entrance to the drier part of the cave. A torch is not really necessary.

I think an underrated mountain the views from the summit are fantastic.

Personally I prefer the views from here more than the summit of Helvelyn and most people skip this out so it’s usually quiet and peaceful

Brilliant 360 degree views from the summit make this hill a good objective, but for a fuller mountain day the quieter but longer path over the Snarker Pike ridge is recommended rather then just a quick up and down from the Kirkstone pass

For experienced hikers, the area offers several challenging routes. The ascent to Helvellyn Summit via Striding Edge is a classic, known for its knife-edge arête and significant high-level walking. Another demanding climb is to Red Screes summit cairn from Kirkstone Pass, offering excellent panoramic views. You can find more difficult hiking routes, such as the 'Striding Edge, Helvellyn & Swirral Edge loop from Glenridding', on the Hiking around Patterdale guide.
Yes, there are options suitable for families. The path to Orrest Head is relatively easy and provides panoramic views of Windermere, making it accessible for many. Rydal Cave is also considered family-friendly, offering an interesting exploration of a former slate mine with stepping stones through shallow water.

The Lake District, including the Patterdale area, is beautiful year-round, but each season offers a different experience. Spring and autumn provide pleasant temperatures and vibrant scenery, ideal for hiking. Summer is popular for longer days and water activities. Winter can be challenging with snow and ice on higher fells, but offers dramatic, quieter landscapes for well-prepared visitors. Always check weather conditions before heading out.
The Lake District is renowned for wild swimming, and many of its lakes and tarns offer opportunities for a refreshing dip. While specific wild swimming spots are not detailed in the highlights, Ullswater, being a major lake in the area, is a popular choice for wild swimming. Always prioritize safety, check water quality, and be aware of cold water shock.
Given the varied terrain and unpredictable weather in the Lake District, it's essential to pack appropriately. We recommend sturdy waterproof hiking boots, waterproof and windproof outer layers, warm clothing (even in summer), a map and compass (or GPS device), sufficient water and snacks, a first-aid kit, and sun protection. For more challenging routes, consider a headlamp and emergency shelter.
While popular spots can get busy, exploring some of the smaller tarns or less-trafficked paths can offer a quieter experience. Early mornings or late afternoons, especially outside of peak season, can also help avoid crowds on popular trails. Look for routes that don't directly lead to the most famous summits or viewpoints if you prefer solitude.
