I was doing the Badger and sought shelter for the night here after battling storm Floris. Don't know who it was but a huge thank you goes out to the person who left the fire log next to the fireplace and the small pot of twigs to burn. Rest assured, it helped me to dry out.

Also known as 'McCook's Cottage', Ben Alder Cottage is a remote bothy set below Ben Alder and above Loch Ericht. Sleeping up to six people (it's worth taking a tent so you can wild camp nearby if it's full when you arrive) it has a wood-burning stove, although residents must supply their own firewood. This bothy has a colourful history, having been used by ghillies (servents/attendants on shoots), stalkers, fishermen, walkers and poachers over the years. It's also said to be haunted...

Lovely little back to basics hostel. Super friendly staff. Compost loo. Allowed me to camp right next to the loch. Donation in the pot :)

Known locally as Carnegie's Bothy, the Dalnashallag Bothy is a small but charming shelter. It stands on the high, open moorland of Strath an Eilich and is on the route of the East Highland Way. Usefully, the River Calder flows by about 65 feet (20 m) from its door. The bothy is within striking distance of three Monadhliath Munros: Càrn Dearg, A' Chailleach and Carn Sgulain. It is not a facility maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association and is often used by deer stalkers.

The Laggan area, particularly in the Scottish Highlands, is known for its bothies and youth hostels. These range from basic shelters like Blackburn of Corrieyairack Bothy and Dalnashallag Bothy, offering a free roof for overnight stays, to more structured options like Loch Ossian Youth Hostel, which provides simplistic hostel accommodation with communal facilities.
Yes, Blackburn of Corrieyairack Bothy is maintained by the M.B.A. It serves as a perfect shelter near the bottom of the Corrieyairack Pass. Other bothies like Dalnashallag Bothy are not MBA maintained.
The region around Laggan is ideal for various outdoor activities. You can explore numerous hiking trails, such as those leading to the Monadhliath Munros near Dalnashallag Bothy, or enjoy cycling. For specific routes, check out the MTB Trails around Laggan, Waterfall hikes around Laggan, and Gravel biking around Laggan guides.
Many huts in the Laggan area are remote and not accessible by road. For example, Loch Ossian Youth Hostel is only accessible on foot or by bike, located near the UK's most remote train station. Similarly, bothies like Ben Alder Cottage Bothy require significant walking or cycling to reach.
While many bothies are remote and require a good level of fitness, the Loch Ossian Youth Hostel offers family rooms and a communal living space, making it a more structured option. For walks, look for 'easy' or 'moderate' difficulty routes in the nearby guides, such as the Waterfall hikes around Laggan, which include some easier options like the Falls of Truim loop.
Amenities vary significantly. Basic bothies like Blackburn of Corrieyairack Bothy often provide a free roof and a stove (though you might need to bring your own wood). Loch Ossian Youth Hostel offers more, including separate dorms, family rooms, a communal living room, and a kitchen. Remember that many remote huts have composting toilets and require you to carry out all your rubbish.
Yes, some huts have interesting histories. Ben Alder Cottage Bothy, also known as 'McCook's Cottage', has a rich history of use by ghillies, stalkers, fishermen, walkers, and poachers, and is even said to be haunted. Dalnashallag Bothy is locally known as Carnegie's Bothy.
Given the basic nature of many bothies, you should always bring your own sleeping gear. If a bothy has a stove, like Blackburn of Corrieyairack Bothy or Ben Alder Cottage Bothy, it's advisable to bring your own supply of firewood as it may not be available nearby. For hostels like Loch Ossian Youth Hostel, remember there's no rubbish disposal, so you'll need to carry out everything you bring in.
Options are limited due to the remote nature of many huts. For example, near Loch Ossian Youth Hostel, you can find a hearty meal at the nearby Station Inn pub. However, for most bothies, you should plan to be self-sufficient and carry all your food and cooking supplies.
The huts are situated in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, offering stunning natural landscapes. You can expect mountainous terrain, lochs like Loch Ericht near Ben Alder Cottage Bothy, and open moorland as seen around Dalnashallag Bothy. The area is characterized by remote landscapes and provides a setting for self-sufficient outdoor experiences.
Yes, some bothies present unique challenges. For Luib Chonnal Bothy, there are a few water crossings from the Brae Roy Lodge direction, which could be problematic in spate. However, there are substantial footbridges upstream and downstream that can be used to cross the river. Always check conditions and maps carefully.
